Katarina Witt
German figure skater Katarina Witt was a former skater. Witt is regarded as one of the greatest female singles figure skating champions, having been twice an Olympic champion. According to her Laureus profile Witt is most well-known for her athleticism, charismatic appeal as well as her glamorous look on the skates.
Witt won her first Olympic gold medal for East Germany in 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. She then won a second one at 1988 Calgary Olympics. She is the only skater to have won the singles women's Olympic award. Sonja Henie, from Norway, was second. Witt is a four-time World Champion (1984, 1985 1987, 1988) and twice the World silver medalist (1982 and 1986). Six straight European Championships were won by Witt (1983-1988) this is an achievement that Sonja Henie, a female skater, can only be able to match. Between 1984 and 1988, Witt won ten golds from 11 major international events and was among the top figure skaters.
